What is reflexology?

Reflexology is a non-invasive holistic therapy that involves the pressing and massaging of specific reflex points on the feet and hands. These points correspond to the various systems, organs and glands in the body.

Reflexology treats the whole body and thus allowing both the causes and the symptoms of ill health to be addressed. All age groups, from children through to adults, can benefit from reflexology.

Reflexology has been shown to be effective in relieving many conditions:

Stress

It is now generally acknowledged by both orthodox medicine and complementary therapists that stress depletes your immune system and your ability to deal with incoming illnesses. It is also recognised that stress is a key factor in triggering the persistent problems of long-term chronic conditions. Reflexology is very effective in helping to combat the effects of stress in modern day life. It helps redress internal imbalances caused by tension, inducing deep relaxation and bringing your body back into balance, thereby encouraging the body to heal itself naturally, whilst at the same time boosting your immune system.

Reflexology as part of cancer-care

Mandy is a volunteer at the Paul D'Auria Cancer Support Centre, Battersea, where reflexology is offered as an additional therapy to patients suffering from many forms of cancer.

Reflexology along with other complementary therapies can help combat the stress and anxieties of orthodox treatment and may help reduce side effects like nausea. It can assist with the re-establishment of the general feeling of well-being by offering relaxation, the restoration of balance and increased vitality
